Martha POWNALL (1819-1886)

Martha POWNALL was the daughter of Peter and Martha POWNALL. Martha was born in Stockport, Cheshire in 1819 and was baptised in Stockport on 28th April 1819[1].

Martha married Robert DEAKIN on 13th June 1836 at St Michael and All Angels Church, Mottram in Longdendale, Cheshire[2]. Robert and Martha had the following children:

  1. Alice DEAKIN (DAKIN), b. 1837, Stockport, Cheshire, baptised 24 Dec 1837 @ St Mary's, Stockport
  2. Samuel Pownall DEAKIN, b. 1839, Stockport, d. Wigan, Lancashire 1929
  3. Harriett DEAKIN, b. 20 Feb 1841, Stockport, d. 1900
  4. Sarah DEAKIN, b. 1843, Stockport, d. March 1931, Upholland, Lancashire
  5. Rachael DEAKIN, b. 1846, Ardwick, Lancashire, d. 1898, Pemberton, Lancashire
  6. Martha Pownall DEAKIN, b. 1848, Droylsden, Lancashire, d. 1908, Stockport
  7. Mary DEAKIN, b. 1850, Droylsden
  8. George DEAKIN, b. 1853, Stockport, d. 1932, Stockport

In the 1841 Census Robert is listed as aged 25, occupation: 'Overlooker Power Looms' living at New Bridge Lane, Stockport, with wife Martha (aged 25), son Samuel Pownall (aged 2) and daughter Harriet (aged 3 months).

In the 1851 Census Robert (aged 35 years, 'Loom Weaver') is listed as visiting with his parents George and Rachel DEAKIN at 60 Lancashire Hill, Heaton Norris. His wife, Martha, is recorded as living with John DEAKIN (Robert's brother) with 4 of her daughters[3].

Robert died in 1855 in Stockport.

Martha is recorded in the 1871 census as living at 4 Brinnington Rise, Brinnington (to the north east of Stockport in Cheshire), occupation 'Housekeeper'. Recorded with her are: Rachel, aged 25, 'Cotton Winder', Martha, aged 22, 'Milliner' and Mary, aged 20, 'Cotton Winder'.
