Alfred TANDY
(1841 - 1917)

Alfred TANDY, born in 1841 in the parish of Winchcombe, Gloucestershire[1], married Mary Ann DAVIS (b. Dumbleton, Gloucestershire in 1845[2]) in the parish of Winchcomb in 1865[3].

In the 1881 Census of England and Wales, Alfred's occupation is recorded as 'Labourer', living at Cottage, Alderton, Gloucestershire, with his wife, Mary Ann (occupation 'Gloveress') and 6 children.

Alfred and Mary had the following children:

  2. Mary Ann TANDY, b. 1868, Winchcombe, m. Richard ROBERTS in 1891, Winchcombe
  3. John TANDY, b. 1871, Winchcombe
  4. Charles TANDY, b. 1874, Winchcombe
  5. Walter TANDY, b. 1877, Winchcombe
  6. Albert TANDY, b. 1879, Winchombe, d. 23 March 1918, Somme, France[4]
  7. Alfred William TANDY, b. 1884, Winchombe, m. Nellie TURNER (b. c1884) in Evesham, Worcestershire in 1908.
  8. Edith Louisa TANDY, b. 1886, Winchombe
  9. Florence Kate TANDY, b. 1890, Winchcombe, m. John Bertram DEAKIN 1914, Winchcomb

In the 1891 Census, Cottage, Alderton, Alfred's occupation is recorded as 'General Dealer'. Eldest daugther, Eleanor, is recorded as working at a 'Jam Factory' presumably at the nearby Naunton Field Jam Factory, Toddington (which was sold in 1901 as part of the Toddington House Estate) and was later owned by the Deakin family. John is recorded as a 'Farm Labourer' and Charles a 'General Labourer'.

At the time of the 1901 Census Alfred and Mary were still living in Alderton with sons Albert and Alfred and daughters Edith and Florence.

Alfred died, aged 75 years, on 4th February 1917 and Mary, aged 83 years, on 22nd December 1928.

Both Alfred and Mary are buried together in the churchyard at the church of St Margaret of Antioch, Alderton in plots 214a and b. The inscription on the headstone reads:

"IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR DEAR PARENTS ALFRED TANDY DIED FEB 4 1917 AGED 75
MARY ANN TANDY DIED DEC 22 1922 AGED 83 AT REST"
