Dorothea May BURROW
(1897 - 1966)

Dorothea May BURROW was born in 1897 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire[1]. Dorothea was the youngest daughter of Edward John BURROW (1869-1935) and Alice Elizabeth Burrow (née Fildes).

Dorothea married William George DEAKIN in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire on Saturday 10th August 1918 at Highbury Congregational Church, Cheltenham[2]:

The above photo[3] is of Capt. William G. Deakin (centre) with his wife Dorothea May (née BURROW). Standing at the back of the photo is John Bertram Deakin and his wife Florence. Dorothea's parents Mr Edward John Burrow and his wife, Alice Elizabeth Burrow (née FILDES) are seated to the left of the bride and groom and Mr William Robert Deakin and his wife Mary Jane (née HARTLEY) are seated to the right. It is likely that the other lady in the photo in the back row is Dorothea's sister Miss Beatrice Millar Burrow.

Transcript of the article announcing the marriage in The Evesham Journal and Four Shires Advertiser, Saturday 17th August 1918.

William and Dorothea had the following children:

  1. Peter Robert Burrow DEAKIN, b. 5 Jul 1920[4], d. 23 Jan 1997[5]
  2. Thomas M Burrow DEAKIN, b. 1921[6]
  3. William DEAKIN, b. 1922[7], d. 1922[8]

The couple lived at Toddington, Gloucestershire where William managed the Deakin's jam factory and canning factory at Norton Fields.

Dorothea filed for divorce in 1929 and William and Dorothea were granted a decree nisi in 1932. Dorothea moved to Sundoré, Arteberry Road, Wimbledon, Surrey and William to London. In 1935 Dorothea changed her name, under Deed Poll dated 18th April 1935, to Dorothea May PICKUP[9], completely renouncing the Deakin name. However, in January 1942, Dorothea changed her name to Dorothea May DEAKIN-BURROW[10].

Dorothea died on 3rd July 1966 in Cheltenham Hospital. Her death notice appeared in The Times on Wednesday 6th July 1966: "On July 3, 1966, peacefully in hospital, Dorothea May Deakin-Burrow, of Three Ways, Coombe Hill, near Cheltenham, younger daughter of the late Ed J. Burrow, FRGS, and Mrs Burrow, sister of Mrs B.M. Sidaway, loved mother of Peter and dearest mother-in-law of Ursula".
